About the Course

Kayak Therapy

Dive into a unique journey of self-discovery with our kayak therapy, where the rhythm of the paddle intertwines mental and physical wellness. Our services range from intensive one-on-one sessions with our registered nurse, collaborating with healthcare professionals, to group therapy, fostering communal support. As you progress, experience the freedom of club-style social paddling, leading to independent adventures. Embark on this transformative path through the waters, from guided care to self-reliance. Your voyage to empowerment starts here.

How it works

Each kayak therapy session begins with a gentle and thorough introduction to the gear and environment. We dedicate about 30 minutes to getting familiar with the equipment—everything from paddles to cold water immersion suits—so clients feel comfortable, confident, and safe before even touching the water. I supply all necessary gear and guide participants through a step-by-step checklist, ensuring they’re properly outfitted and ready.

Once on the water, we paddle calm, protected routes for approximately 60 to 90 minutes. These sessions are progressive: as skills grow, so can the complexity of our paddles—if appropriate. Throughout, I integrate professional kayak instruction (I’m a certified sea kayak instructor), giving clients the physical competencies to become capable, independent paddlers.

Therapeutic work happens organically, in motion. I use techniques such as motivational interviewing to guide reflection, reinforce coping strategies, and support clients in articulating and achieving their goals. We might talk about what’s come up for them recently, or gently draw metaphors from paddling to life’s challenges. I also incorporate practices like walking meditation, always tailored to the individual’s comfort level.
